Embroidery Machine Operator, 2nd shift

Job Description:

The Embroidery Machine Operator is responsible for operating multiple head machines, creating a variety of logos and decorative designs on customized headwear and apparel products in our facility in Miami, FL. This job takes place in a manufacturing environment. Must be able to work second shift.


  • Tends semiautomatic sewing machine with multiple-sewing heads to embroider names, letters, or decorative designs/logos on fronts, backs, middles, peaks, and other panels
  • Reads work order to determine type and location of embroidery, as well as thread colors and color sequence needed
  • Counts parts, checks for cloth defects, checks for proper taping and cover stitches, and separates parts by sizes
  • Places spools of thread on required spindle of each sewing head and draws thread through machine, guides, tensions, and eye of needle while adjusting thread tension by turning appropriate knobs to the left or right on the front of each sewing head
  • Retrieves applicable embroidery file noted on work order and loads it into embroidery machine. Retrieves and returns tape sample noted on work from/to the embroidery disk file system
  • Determines start/finish point and foam requirements using the tape instruction sheet and tape sample
  • Keeps all sensitive matters confidential
  • Other duties as assigned

The following is applicable to a flatbed-style embroidery machine

  • Loads and removes tear-away paper onto the machine and clamps tear-away paper in place on machine's pantogram
  • Embroiders "lines" on the tear-away paper, which are used as guides for the proper placement and loading of panels (fronts, backs, middles, peaks, etc.)
  • Applies glue to the tear-away paper and strategically glues panels in a location that will allow

the operator to utilize the space efficiently. This is done while machine is stopped or running

  • Using the control buttons on the machine's computer, positions pantogram so that all panels are properly located at the correct start/finish point and under the needle containing the (first) color used in the embroidered design
  • Moves the machine's bar switch to the left to "stop" and to the right to "start" the machine
  • Removes completed panels from the mounted tear-away paper
  • Removes any unnecessary or excessive threads, foam, tear-away paper, oil, or glue from each panel

The following is applicable to a cap-style embroidery machine

  • Loads each cap appropriately onto a brace/bracket that is properly attached to a corresponding sewing head
  • Depresses start/stop button to start or stop machine
  • Unloads brace/bracket after embroidered design is complete and loads additional braces/brackets.
  • Observes sewing operation to detect defects in stitching, such as looping, gaps, and frays, that indicate machine malfunction. Notifies the embroidery supervisor if unable to satisfactorily correct the issue
  • May "float" back stitches or reorder parts to repair defective embroidery or fill in blanks left by the embroidery machine
  • May utilize cleaning tool with cleaning fluid to remove any dirt, oil, or other stains from any embroidered panel
  • Responsible for the quality of caps embroidered according to company quality guidelines
  • Changes bobbins and rewinds bobbin thread onto an extra set during the operation. Maintains proper bobbin tension on bobbin casings
  • Oils bobbin hooks and changes needles
  • Obtains supplies such as threads, tear-away paper, foam, and glue from proper locations
  • Obtains supplies such as production sheets, clipping snips, needles, rulers, bobbins, and bobbin casings from supervisor
  • Applies new tear-away paper, sweeps floor, fills bobbins and casings, empties garbage at end of shift

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors

  • Sewing skills preferred
  • Mathematical skills including ability to read a ruler
  • Visual Acuity
  • Ability to walk and stand for an 8 hour shift
  • Manual dexterity to grasp, pinch, and pull
  • Ability to consistently reach minimum production requirements
  • Enthusiastic, positive person who embraces work with a sense of urgency and persistence
  • Lifting/Carrying up to 30 lbs may be required in order to meet daily requirements of the cell new work order for the next shift

Education and Experience

  • Experience in a production environment preferred
