  • Employment Type: PermanentThe University of Miami/UHealth Ann Bates Leach Eye Hospital/SCCC Department of Ocular Oncology has an exciting opportunity for a full time Nurse Specialist. Responsibilities include, planning, implementing, evaluating, and coordinating patient care and clinical activities. As a patient educator, this person will be responsible for creating, distributing, and explaining educational materials in the clinic and in the community to patients and the families of patients with retinoblastoma, ocular melanoma and other eye tumors. As a patient representative, this person will be responsible for coordinating all new and follow-up appointments of all patients with intraocular tumors and pseudotumors managed on the Ocular Oncology Service. Additionally, due to the increasing frequency of multi-specialty cancer care, this person will assure appropriate follow-up, integration and coordination of care with other medical specialties, including but not limited to Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology and Pathology. This job requires a person who is self-motivated, creative, compassionate, dedicated and energetic. This individual will deal frequently with cancer patients and their families and must be willing to spend significant time in person and on the telephone talking with patients and family members.Oncology Services ALBEH:Coordinate all new and follow-up appointments of patients managed on the ocular oncology service. Establish computerized follow-up for all further testing, consultation and follow-up to assure integrated comprehensive care.Coordinate surgical scheduling for surgical procedures, including examinations under anesthesia (EUA), enucleation, I-125 plaque radiotherapy, ocular biopsy, and intra-arterial chemotherapy, systemic chemotherapy, external beam radiotherapy and other procedures.Integrate care of Pediatric Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology to assure appropriate serial follow-up and comprehensive care integration for patients undergoing multi-specialty oncology treatment.Coordinate discharge planning and future follow-up including housing (e.g., Hope Lodge, Ronald MacDonald House), transportation (e.g., Angel flight), rehabilitation services (e.g., Low Vision, Social Service, Lighthouse, Public School) and social services.Coordinate and integrate initial pediatric screening, neuroimaging, echography, photography, clinical examination and examination under anesthesia.Coordinate and integrate, as necessary, radiation oncology and/or pediatric oncology examination, treatment and follow-up.Schedule MRI and CT scans at appropriate patient intervals. Call patients with test results, review and alert Dr. Harbour of results, and manage results in computerized database.Schedule all EUA and surgery dates, and track with computerized database.Schedule follow-up appointments and track with computerized database.Coordinate pediatric discharge planning with specific attention to appropriateness and effectiveness of services provided.Work closely with support organizations to coordinate assistance provided to patients and their families.Follow up with patients that fail to keep appointment and/or surgery date.Observe pediatric signs of neglect for follow-up care and treatment and report findings.Assess patient needs for counseling and make appropriate referrals to community services or agencies, school programs to assist with educational needs for pediatric patients.Collaborate with the Admitting Department to facilitate out-of-country patient appointment/surgery.Provide continuous teaching and education to the families of children with retinoblastoma including general knowledge of retinoblastoma, genetics and implications, screening techniques, and new treatment modalities.Help create, maintain, distribute, and explain patient educational information of retinoblastoma and melanoma. This will include direct interaction with patients in the clinics and distribution of information by mail.Coordinate and integrate all clinical care for children and families with retinoblastoma.Act as a liaison between Dr. Harbour and patients, patient family members, UMMG, SCCC, BPEI and other institutions involved in patients' care..Research/Clinical Trials ABLEH/SCCC:Oversee clinical trial activities on the Ocular Oncology ServiceIdentify appropriate patients for referral to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for possible entry into clinical trials.Maintain list of active clinical trials at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and elsewhere for medical oncology and pediatric oncology clinical trials for appropriate eye tumor patients.Assist Dr. James William Harbour in monitoring the health and responses of patients during clinical trials, recording physical assessments and vital signs, administering the investigated compounds or therapies and coordinating research activities.Maintain accurate record of all protocol activities and events, sampling times, special test procedures and adverse events.Follow progress of patients and provide for their care, comfort and safety by attending to their needs during study participation.Record and assess patient adverse events with further escalation to medical personnel for evaluation & treatment as warranted.Ensure effective verbal and written communications inter and intra departmentally in the planning and implementation of volunteer clinical research regimens.Help inform ophthalmologists in the community regarding the current status of clinical trials involving retinoblastoma patients and help inform patients about community resources for the visually impaired.Maintain all clinical files and computer databases on patients evaluated and followed within the ocular oncology service and within the currently funded ocular oncology clinical studies.The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.UHealth-University of Miami Health System, South Florida's only university-based health system, provides leading-edge patient care powered by the ground breaking research and medical education at the Miller School of Medicine.
